A Tale of Two Cities

Yes, yes…I know I’ve been horrid – putting up this blog almost a month after the TT night! My bad – but I’ve genuinely been bogged down with work. And that, by the by, I’m utterly delighted about! Yeah, I’m one of those. *silly grin*

By the by, I’ve realized I leave ‘Truly Thursdays’ in the title of each post. Kinda lame, since this blog is dedicated to TT! :D Mistake rectified for future posts, including this one, but will not go back and change the others. Time constraints, remember?

So what did we get upto on 26 November? For starters – it was a public holiday (it was a long weekend, thanks to Eid)! And for reasons I’m not particularly sure I understand, we tend to skip TT’s on public holiday Thursdays. So yeah, we didn’t have a particularly clichéd TT night.

Having said that – we had two sets of separate TT events that same night! :) One set was a boys-only night, where our TT boys (minus Rohit) went out on their own and kicked some…er…balls! :) While yours truly was in a city far, far away from Dubai! *giggle*

Now, this post will not be like the other quick-sentenced TT posts since it wasn’t a traditional TT night. I will, however, get into details of what happened.

To start off: an extremely dear friend, family member, guide…I could on, ya know? We’ll call him ‘Uncle’ from now on. That’s what I call him anyway! :) So, Uncle had invited me to Abhishek’s (his son and my friend from college) wedding pretty much as soon as the date was finalized. Now, for obvious reasons (read: work, no leave, work, some more work) Rohit and I couldn’t finalize our tickets. It wasn’t until Wednesday that we figured out that there was no way both of us could go. To cut a long story short – Rohit convinced me that I should go on my own since there was no way he could make it! It took very little convincing to get me to agree! Now, the glitch was in trying to get a ticket – everything was overbooked thanks to the long weekend!

And then came into picture our very own wonder woman – my mother in law! *salute* She made a few calls and before long, I had particulars of my flight with me and was rushing home to pack to head out to Calcutta! Oh, Calcutta! *smile*

The days that followed deserve a separate blog post which I will get to sometime soon *fingers crossed*. So, I reached Calcutta on Thursday evening and had a fantastically chilled out evening with Uncle, Aunty, Abhishek, Nana and their close friends. I was introduced to and very briefly spoke to Anandita (the bride to be) who should’ve left to go back to her place, but waited around to meet me! *hugs* There was a lot of strumming, singing (Abhishek played Iktara!) and a little bit of dancing! The mood was…oh so fantastic! Aunty looked stunning – but what else is new? *smile*

Here’s a glimpse of that lovely evening – my very special TT, and the first with Uncle!

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Abhishek Banerjee!

My favourite wall in the house! :)

Poet, singer, guitarist...what more could I possibly say! An absolutely delightful woman to whom I owe one of my poems!

Childhood friends. Can't you just tell? :)

There he is - Uncle. :)

Finally caught one of Aunty's blouse! Yes, yes I know - she's gorgeous!

My second favourite wall in the house!

While some sing along to the tunes being strummed...

...others enjoy the ambience with a drink.

Pensive!

My-mehendi-your-mehendi moment?

The lovely, glowing Jia! :)

Moving on…

So our boys – Claudio, Ryan and Avinash – decided to honor our TT tradition and step out for some random fun. They decided to go to the relatively new entertainment centre at Dubai Mall – Sega Republic! *rolling eyes* And to think they’d be a little less predictable.

What did they get upto? Oh, nothing much – just the fighting-it-out at various consoles. So why start a new paragraph about that? *hehehehehehhehe* Well, that’s because the night wasn’t entirely uneventful! As is customary for anyone who goes to Sega Republic, these boys went on the roller coaster. They didn’t think they’d had enough with the first round, so they decided to go for a second time around.

Now, I’m sure the boys aren’t telling the whole story but I’m sure they did something horrible to tick off the guy manning the roller coaster for as soon as they sat, they realized that it seemed a tad bit notched up! So they went roooooooound and roooooooound and rooooooooound faster than they had the last time! A regular twin-session in any roller coaster is enough to throw anyone off their balance, and these boys got the extended, rough-ed out version the second time around!

Needless to say, they were a little disoriented. So much so that as the wobbly trio was about to get off the coaster there was this heart-wrenching scream from very close by! As Claudio and Avinash looked about to see who got stabbed, they realized that Ryan had doubled over on the floor. Not only was he letting out painful moans, but, they realized, he was curled up on the floor in a foetal position, holding on to his *ahem* crotch!

That’s right, y’all! He knocked his nuts! And pretty hard, I might add! *tearing from laughing real hard*

Needless to say, boys being boys dinnae take any pictures. But here’s what the roller coaster in Dubai Mall looks like:

YAOOOZA!

Ok, I have no idea who those two people are - I just got this picture off Google!

Aaaaaaaaaaanywho…! So that’s what happened last on 26 November in Dubai and Calcutta! :)

Yes, I’m literally just gonna start typing out the blog for the following TT. :) We’ve missed a couple of TT’s, but I’ll mention those in the next one!

And guys – there is a ‘comments’ tab below each blog post. *geeze*

Soon. Toodles!

Truly Thursdays – Board Game Night!

A blog post long overdue is coming your way. Why is it overdue? Oh, I could come up with a million plausible excuses, but am gonna spare y’all the torture and just say that I’ve been busy. Very busy. And very, very lazy. :)

As all things go, I’d decided to put up a poll to allow people to vote in their choices for TT on Wednesday of every week. Alas, that didn’t happen! Well, the poll is up now, but it wasn’t then! So after a quick round of email choices being sent out, followed by choices streaming in, we decided to call it a Board Game Night. And what a night it was!

Our intention was to play Scrabble and Monopoly and see if we could squeeze in a game or two of cards. Yeah, right. *tsk tsk* What was meant to be a night of board games turned out to be a night of Monopoly alone!

And hence we landed up at Sev and Claudio’s place on 19 November, 2009 for a night of insanity a.k.a Monopoly! Here’s what happened:

My C3 partner Claudio was on time – as always – met me in the parking lot – we drove to Sev and Samir to follow them to Samir’s place – our man was in no mood to drive – so we left his car off – got everyone in my car – gave Samir a feel of what a sports car sounds like – since mine only sounds like a sports car and drives like an 80 year old hag – reached Sev and Claudio’s and got the ‘goods’ ready – Rohit showed up shortly with the board games I’d requested him to bring along – Sev and I caught up in the balcony, just like old times – while the boys did what they do best – surf the net – and all of us ended up watching extremely interesting YouTube videos – “Dear Penis” being a clear favourite – as Sev tried desperately to give Rahul directions to get to hers – he’d driven all the way from Abu Dhabi to be a part of TT – that’s how cool we are – he didn’t make it cuz he kept overshooting their building – so he decided to be a part next time – and we finally got around to opening Monopoly after stuffing our faces and having the maiden drinks – 9.15 pm is when all of us settled around and picked our little play pawns – while Rohit all but drooled over the credit card machine and practically got down on his knees in prayer when it automatically calculated the millions it was fed – slowly, all of us were mesmerized – but we snapped outta our fascination – all except Rohit – and went on to play – the first half an hour or so went by rather quickly and uneventful – everyone was getting reacquainted with the rules – most of us hadn’t played it in over a decade – Claudio was the first to pick up a property – and gloating with happiness and joy – foreshadowing his upcoming fate, going by exactly what happened in Dubai – and Samir kept feeling uncannily unlucky with no property, only cash in hand – the men kept going at it and before us women knew it, auctions were taking place – the 3 men were giving us 2 women nasty stares – and smirking, saying “there’s a reason why women aren’t good businessmen” – while Sev and I just kept quiet and watched while the men went at it – before long there were apartments and hotels being built and everyone having to pay up rent – Claudio got his knickers in a knot and was pulling his hair out – at one point he was at Sev’s feet, cuz of the lack of anything else to do – boy thought he could get solace there, but she kicked him right back to his place for having mocked us intelligent women earlier – Samir sat in one corner calculating his growing millions, utterly disappointed that he didn’t have more property – Rohit got kinda fed up with the ‘ka-ching’ sound of the credit card machine and started to sly-ly negotiate with Claudio and Samir for property – I merely sat and waited for Sev to give up the one property I wanted, while she waited for the same from me – soon, her and I were sitting on pots of money and tons of rent and the boys were exasperated – I yawned at one point, saw the time and practically screamed – it was 1.30am – just seeing the time made me drowsy and I passed out on the couch while the other 3 played – Claudio declared bankruptcy and saved the little hair on his head in the bargain – Samir and Rohit fought it out for second place while the clear winner of the game with $ 32 million was Sevda – aptly name the Donald Trump of our Board Game/Monopoly Night!

*phew*

That took a while! And to think that we didn’t even get to open another board game!

Here's a peek at the different sentiments and moods of our Board Game Night!

My experiments with the D3000 continue...

The angels...

Rohit and Sev - model material, the pair of 'em!
Just getting started - big!
Samir's quite fascinated with his credit card! He's finally allowed to own one. :P
Rohit getting carried away with his role as a banker! :)

That tongue-in-cheek expression says it all! My fair lady chants: Just you wait, I begin...just you wait!
You can see the pain behind that smile, can't you? Good attempt, Samir. His heart was breaking around this time...he'd lost too much!

"Where'd all my money go," says Rohit...
"Here!" answers Sev.

My Cinderella hour (+ 1.5 hrs). :P

Here's a tribute to the changes in Claudio's persona as the night went on.
From "I've got this covered baby!"...

...to "Hmmm...this is...interesting", while Sev's thinking, "We'll see who has the last laugh"...
..."This can't be happening to me..."

..."Saaaaaaave me, baby...please!!!"...

...and finally...
*giggle* Told ya! :)

The following Thursday was 26 November and we were all off for Eid. I’ll put up a quick post on what happened on individual fronts, since we didn’t end up having our ritualistic TT.

We’re off to…um…er…well, we haven’t decided yet. We’ve got 3 votes in and all of them for different things. So, we’ll only find out next time where our little TT gang landed up tonight.

Here’s to TT – toodles!

Truly Thursdays – Marina Walk!

There was a lot of outrage regarding last week’s TT post with Sev objecting to a few things. Such as me mentioning only her being drunk that night. It was brought to my notice that not only were Ryan and Samir equally drunk (or even more, if it’s possible), but that they were *hold your breath* dancing.

Yes, at Trader Vics.

With. Each. Other.

*ROTFLMAO*

That had me in splits! Both Ryan and Samir denied any memory of such a ghastly event…but later seemed to warm up to the idea and I had a distinct feeling that they were up for round two! :) They resisted the temptation, lest we all get deported.

Another thing that Sev brought to my notice was the fact that while Rohit and I were heading out (yes, yes at 10pm), she came with us and all three of us got lost on our way to the parking lot! We were trying to find Samir’s car so I could get my gorgeous roses outta there, and apparently, APPARENTLY, as Sev alleges, I gave them wrong directions. In my defence, I plead temporary lack of judgement due to intense intoxication brought on by – yes m’lord – none other that SEVDA GOKSEL!!!

Ok, so leaving out the drama-shrama, we got lost cuz apparently (no, I won’t stop saying that) I told them that the car was on one level of the parking lot, while, obviously, it was on another. *wince* And of course, I crashed in the car…and was snoring away to glory while Rohit and Sev hunted for Samir’s car. I snored my lungs out in the car, got into the house on my own and then fell on the bed and started snoring again! I still stand by my claim that my drink was spiked.

I also forgot to mention that we celebrated Ryan’s birthday at Trader Vics. Sev spoke to one of the waitresses there and had a piece of cake arranged for him. So while Sev went to the ladies’ room, a nice looking lady comes over to me, puts one hand near my left shoulder while she whispers in my right ear: Which one’s Ryan?

I blinked a few times, trying to figure out what on earth was happening, took a quick peek at Ryan and whispered back: He’s the one in the white full sleeved shirt.

The next thing we knew, they were all standing around the table, singing Happy Birthday for Ryan, while I eyed the cake menacingly. :P

The fact that I left out a million details from that night only goes on to show how whacked-out it was!

Hmmm. Our next TT. That’s tonight.

I’d heard so much about Marina Walk that I’d been itching to go there. But as it happened, we decided to go to a sheesha/dinner place last TT. As amazing as it sounded in the morning, by the end of the day the idea seemed a tad bit claustrophobic, what with the pounding headache I was having. I suggested we head off to the beach. The weather’s been to-die-for and I thought, why not? And so where’d we end up going?

*sheeping grin*

At the Marina Walk (yes, that’s where we ended up going!) on 12 November, 2009, here’s what happened:

Claudio came to our ‘usual spot’ at ET – him and I sat waiting for Ryan, Sev and Samir to show up – Dubai’s skyline was breathtaking in the night sky – we were completely at ease on Corner 3 couches – the weather’s getting nicer by the day – suddenly struck me that we can try heading off to the beach – soak our feet in the water, lie down and just chill – we decided to run this past the others – when, IF, they decided to show up – Ryan showed up at ET with Avinash – four of us headed to the parking lot praying that Sev and Samir would find it this time – they called to say they were parked right next to my car – we discussed the beach idea for a little bit – everyone was starving so we needed to feed ourselves first – we decided to head to Marina Walk, and then go to the beach – we landed up in two cars – boys in the scary looking Endevour and girls in the posh Peugeot – and we sat down, ready to stuff our faces – sheesha was in abundance, as was conversation – we tried to make Avinash feel comfortable but fell flat on our faces – I think we scared the chap a little bit – while we ate, smoked sheesha, conversation flowed – no one mentioned anything about beach – we’d all forgotten about it – and I was kinda preoccupied with getting to the airport to pick up Rohit at midnight – but soon enough, we had a crazy, whacko session of jokes and riddles being thrown at each other – with Ryan’s politically incorrect, racist jokes – which had us constantly glancing over our shoulders – to Sev’s uncannily similar riddle to what I’d thought of asking the lot – to Sev giving us a detailed account of Samir, the superhero – his name, exact spelling and all having been featured in 7 Days newspaper – he was an instant celebrity in our little TT club – despite us all knowing he was too drunk that night to have done anything heroic – to us exchanging emails and getting in suggestions for TT – a poll suggestion on the blog being thrown in the air – and caught by me, but not implemented this time around – to future paintball sessions being organized – and ideas of membership fees being shared – and tiny amounts of membership fees being suddenly transformed into world tours for ‘founder members’ of TT – and us being grossly brought back to earth with the cheque being presented to us – the beach conveniently forgotten!

Craaaaaaaaazie, crazie night, that. :)

There's my favourite couple! Although Sev does look a tad bit demented. Ah well, I love her all the same. :)

There's the latest edition to our TT gang - Avinash. Me staring at god-knows-what and just a hint of our 7 Days hero - Samir!

I don't care if it's pitch black outside, I will not take off my shades.

Email ids and TT ideas being jotted down.

We’ve got ourselves another TT this evening and lessee how that goes!

Updates soon as I have time next week.

Toodles!

Truly Thursdays – at Trader Vic's!

We ended up skipping one Thursday cuz Sev had to travel to Abu Dhabi to attend the most interesting and useful conference she could’ve dreamed of. She was so excited to be there and was bubbling with so much enthusiasm while she told me all about it on gtalk. She was giving me a minute by minute update. *rolling eyes*

Thanks to this, of course, she couldn’t make it in time for Truly Thursdays. And it’s not like Truly Thursdays is some kind of a club (or, at least it wasn’t till then *wink*) that I could’ve done something with someone else.

So we skipped 29 October, 2009 and went straight to our next Truly Thursdays night – 5 October, 2009.

Sev and I’d been meaning to get shit-faced for a while. Sev’s words that TT morning: let’s go get drunk and throw up!!! I thought about it for exactly 1.87 seconds and said, let’s!

And that’s how we ended up at Trader Vic's with Sev, Rohit, Claudio, Ryan, Samir and me.

Here’s how it went:

After a lot of thought I left my car in the office parking lot – decided to come by the next day with Rohit and pick it up – Claudio and Ryan came to Emirates Towers (ET) to meet me – Sev was being driven to ET by Samir – our newest edition to TT – gave Sev specific directions to get to the parking lot cuz I was leaving my stuff in my car – directions like I would give to a 5 year old – and she was still sceptical – says a lot about her and about the company I keep – but Samir and Sev finally found me standing smack in the middle of the road – I was doing that just in case they miss me despite my awesomely-cool directions – Caludio and Ryan walked up to where I was standing just in time to hear me yell to Sev lest the car drive past me – was brimming with joy cuz Rohit had had a dozen roses delivered to my office – and of course, it was Claudio and Sev’s 6 month, 11 month anniversary – yeah, they’re weird that way – so we ended up going to Traders Vic (TV) at about 6-ish – started drinking – kick off drink being Tiki Puka Puka – their speciality that was downed by Samir cuz he was the newest – and hence the most naïve – and the others had a mix of a lot of stuff throughout the night – Tequilla, Suffering Bastard, Titanic, Manahune, Potted Parrot, Caparinya, Mojito – yes they’re all names of actual cocktails – I dug out my camera that Rohit brought when he arrived later and started clicking pictures of everything – Ryan got annoyed cuz I kept clicking his drink – me thinks he wanted me to click him – it didn’t deter me and I kept going on – then Sev and I went to ‘break the seal’ as Sev put it – when we came back from the ladies’ we went on a laughing frenzy – we were both in our happy place – the details after that are a tad bit hazy – I do remember walking with Sev to a corner with an obnoxious looking statue stood – under which was a group of 3 people whom I ended up clicking as well – with their permission – the woman had a dangerously low neckline – so I will not put up that picture – but I scared them by telling them about our TT and this blog – dreadful look they gave – went back to table and had a shot with Sev and practically passed out after that – Sev stole my second drink saying I should hold – and I substituted the drink with grabbing my D 3000 and asking Rohit to take our picture – when we saw the picture Sev said to me, and I quote – “Delete this picture!!! I look like a lesbian, but the male part” – and that sent us into another laughing frenzy – I ended up emailing myself this quote from my BB lest I forgot what she had said – Rohit and I left soon afterwards – a little past 10pm – yes, I know, extremely early – and I ended up passed out in the car – while our lovely Sev ended up ‘talking to the toilet’ – so she finally got what she wanted – to get trashed and throw up all over!

And we’ve got quite a few people interested in our TT nights! As Sev said: looks like we’ve got ourselves a club of sorts! Brin’ ‘em on, I say! :)

There's Samir in red stripes. I wanna say KFC-shirt, but it isn't quite there yet. :) And that's Rohit, checking cricket scores on his BB and having an animated conversation with Claudio (a.k.a. his b*tch) across the table.

That's Ryan, our birthday boy. He stole my sexy glasses. Ryan, they don't work on you as well as they work on me. Live with it.

What, pray tell, are you attempting here, Claudio? :)

And here's Sev and me. Quite obviously, this is the lesbian-man picture. LOL! I think it's more of a deer-headlights picture, donchya think, Sev?

We’re off for a quiet-er night of sheesha, dinner and utter mayhem tonight! :)

Till I find time to put up tonight’s Truly Thursdays adverture…toodles!

TGI Thursday!

Truly Thursdays – The First One!

As promised, here’s a quick round up of 22 October – our very first Truly Thursdays!

Abu Ali, Sheikh Zayed Road – picked up Sev from outside Mazda showroom where we both decided that she would be a horrible hooker, what with her black clothes blending in with the night and me driving right past her – we also agreed that she was a horrible contender for it cuz she’s too tall – ok, so that was only me saying that – at the restaurant we ordered sheesha along with some utterly unhealthy food – made sure ‘healthy iced tea’ was not ordered – substituted that with coke, not diet coke – had the darn sheesha man try to act smart with me – talked to me in Arabic thinking he was cool – which he so wasn’t! – waited for Dustin to come by since he was leaving for US the next day – chilled with him, gave him a glimpse of the insanity that is Sev and I – he agreed we looked like bestEST of pals – convinced my husband of two months as of that date to join us after his rigorous work out – and he did – and then came Claudio and Ryan – and the boys suddenly outnumbered us – we sat in a corner, giggling to ourselves and looking over our men with affection-filled eyes (??) – me and hubby had to head out elsewhere and buggered off at 10pm while the others stayed on – all in all, Sev and I ended up successfully completely the first of many to come Truly Thursdays!

Now, like I’d said, Sev and I didn’t end up taking pictures that day. But I thought about it and said, since this is an introduction to us, I’ll put a picture of her and me here! :) This one’s from one of our weekend getaways. We were trying to pose like, well, idiots, to be honest. *wink*

Till next our next Truly Thursdays adverture…toodles! :)

So basically, you get the picture. And you’re prolly sitting there, reading this, saying to yourself, OMG! That’s what I do all the time with my friends! And do you ever get around to meeting up? Hmmm, didn’t think so.

I got married in August, 2009 (in India) and have been back at work (I work in Dubai) since mid September. My friend Sevda works here as well. She couldn’t make it to the wedding and we haven’t met since I’ve been back. It is now almost the end of October. Yes, we tried, we talked about it, we spent hours chatting about how we never meet up. Did we finally end up meeting? Yeah, rhetorical question.

One weekend, thanks to a business proposal that Sevda and her husband Claudio were being introduced to by my husband Rohit, all of us finally decided to catch up! We finally got done with the presentation and decided to go for a quick movie. Since both Rohit and I had brought in our cars, we decided to have a boys-girls car only session. :) Those are always fun, especially if you have a 13-year-old-stuck-in-a-30-year-old’s-body for a husband. :) It was completely whacky, what with us chasing them and then them chasing us. Don’t worry, we kept within the sane-driving limit. *rolling eyes*

So anyhow…halfway to the movie hall, the men were leading the way (no, not cuz I dinnae know where to go, but cuz they’re idiots and full of themselves!) and my husband started doing all kinds weird things…like indicating the wrong way so I’d take it and then they’d laugh over it later, and some more stupidity like that! Anyhow…we were laughing our rear ends off and Sev was at her so-happy-that-I’m-cryin stage! :) It was then, and as unbelievable as it might seem, both of said the same thing at the same time: we’ve got to do this more often!

Yes, the same dialogue that we’d been ranting for months! Only that this time, we put our foot down (or is it “feet down?!”) and said, let’s decide on a plan and let’s do it now. So we did.

That was the beginning of Truly Thursdays!

We’ve pledged to carry on Truly Thursdays with just the two of us if no one else is willing to join us. :) The idea is to make an effort to catch up. No one ever has time to do anything – you’ve gotta make the effort to find time to catch up with a few special people, spend some quality time together, even if it means you meet them for just half an hour!

Our Truly Thursdays began last Thursday, 22 October at a Lebanese restaurant cum sheesha place close to where both Sev and I work. It was a grand success (I do hate using that phrase!). We had a great time, and it was nothing short of utterly delightful!

We’ve decided to make a ‘bucket list’ of sorts and keep checking things off of it as and how we proceed. :) It also saves us the torture of repeatedly saying to one another: so, whaddaya wanna do this Thursday? That kinda takes the fun outta catching up – makes it more of a chore than a fun activity! :) So we’ve both started putting together our lists of what we’ve been meaning to do here in Dubai but never got around to it. Or stuff that we’ve already done but wouldn’t mind doing again! :) I’ve got 7 things on my list so far. And I’m sure as and how we move from one Truly Thursdays’ night to another, our lists will move from a 7 to a 70 stage!

What I’m going to try to do – and I’m not making any promises here – is that I’ll try to do a quick random text post of what we did each Thursday and prolly add a quick picture to show how weird it all got! :) I do hope I get around to doing it!

Here’s to us and to Truly Thursdays! :)
